In the first year of our response, we have reached over 2.4 million people with humanitarian aid in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh and Azad Jammu Kashmir. Oxfam's response focused on clean water, sanitation kits and hygiene supplies, food and essential household items, shelter, and helping with the initial rescue work.

Millions are affected by the Pakistan floods 2010.

The floods that have engulfed Pakistan over the last week are a mega disaster and the world needs to mount a mega response to ensure the millions affected get the help they need, international aid agency Oxfam said today as it called for a “gear shift” in the response to the crisis.

After the Haiti earthquake, thousands of people were left without sanitation. People need toilets from day one, so Oxfam is trialling various solutions such as peepoo bags and other innovative methods.

10,000 food kits with local agricultural products have been distributed in many Haitian cities. Oxfam favors this approach in order to encourage local production, which is key to the revitalization of the economy.

A second Oxfam relief team has delivered supplies to 2,000 earthquake survivors in Qinghai. In addition, Oxfam will also be helping with public hygiene information campaigns and is flying in 600 tents.

Oxfam Hong Kong has distributed blankets for 2,000 survivors of the earthquake in a temporary camp in Yushu County, Qinghai. Yet, about 20,000 people are living in this camp, and the needs are urgent.

Oxfam has been working hard to get a resettlement site ready for the first people to arrive, installing latrines, showers and water bladders. Thousands of people must be relocated due to the high risk of mudslides after the January 2010 earthquake.

International agency Oxfam is preparing to send blankets and water proof sheeting as part of a $260,000 aid package to the earthquake hit area of Yushu County of south-eastern Qinghai Province in northwest China.

Food distribution at a community canteen

Clotide Anilus, a 38-year-old mother of three, is one of the beneficiaries of Oxfam-funded community canteens. Through these canteens, Oxfam provides free hot meals to 4,500 earthquake survivors in the area.

The Haitian government must ensure new camps are ready to receive earthquake survivors before more evacuations take place. Agencies are rushing to prepare a new site in time for people who must be relocated due to the high risk of mudslides.
