Rape, forced labor, reprisal attacks and torture are surging in eastern Congo as the result of the recent UN-backed military offensive, according to a new in-depth survey of nearly 600 villagers carried out by international aid agency Oxfam.

A weak international donor response is hampering efforts to assist more than two million women, men and children affected by conflict in northwest Pakistan, raising the risk of prolonged suffering and instability, says international agency Oxfam.

World Refugee Day was established in 2000 by the United Nations General Assembly. The first event was held in 2001 to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.
