Since 1998, an estimated 5.4 million people have lost their lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The current escalation of fighting is the worst it has been in years. Oxfam aims to reach around 230,000 people affected by this new crisis with clean water, sanitation services and protection support.

International agency Oxfam today accuses European member states of turning their backs on the suffering of the people in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The crisis in DRC is horrendous for hundreds of thousands of people displaced due to the unabated violence.

EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels today (Monday, 10 November) must provide clear commitments to send European troops to support the UN in eastern Congo. The fragile ceasefire is now broken, forcing thousands of people to flee again.

Fresh fighting in eastern Congo has displaced tens of thousands more people from their homes, international aid agency Oxfam said today (29 October 2008) as it called for urgent action to bring the region back from the brink.
