International aid agency Oxfam today starts its initial assistance in two worst-affected districts in Ha Tinh province, central Vietnam where torrential rain has brought two consecutive severe floods to one of the poorest and most disaster-prone parts of the country.

From Samoa to the Philippines to Indonesia and Vietnam, Oxfam has been providing clean water, blankets, hygiene kits and other vital provisions to local communities that desperately need them.

Oxfam will send an 11-strong team of aid experts to the storm-hit province of Kon Tum in central Vietnam, hit by typhoon Ketsana last night. They will carry out an assessment of needs and start initial response work immediately.

Ho Thi Hom's life changed for the better when she joined the rice cultivation training in 2006; the activity was part of a market-based model by Oxfam Hong Kong and International Development Enterprises (IDE) which aimed to improve the incomes of 200 families.
