Unheard Voices: Afghan women and their children
These women and children from Afghanistan – who had never had the opportunity to express themselves through the medium of photography before – were trained to use the cameras and write descriptions to accompany their photographs. Their work gives a unique insight into how the women see themselves and the challenges they face on a daily basis.
From the refugee camp in Fatehbarg, in Jalalabad City, to the northern mountain-top village of Shawak, in Badakshan, the themes are consistent – reoccurring issues are health care, water, education, and earning a living. There is an abundance of hope in these communities that their message about the urgent need for assistance will be heard.
'Unheard Voices' is a participatory photography project organized by Oxfam partner ACBAR and photographer Leslie Knott.
