Map of Central African Republic

Central African Republic (CAR)

More than 900,000 people have fled their homes because of the long-running civil conflict that erupted into violence in December 2013. Over half the country's population is now in urgent need of assistance. We are delivering essential aid to many of those in need.

What we are doing

We are supporting people in the Central African Republic (CAR) and neighboring Chad where thousands have taken refuge with access to food and clean water.

We are providing access to clean water to displaced populations by distributing water filters, rehabilitating water points, and by trucking water to where people have found refuge; including a hospital in Bangui, hosting 8,000 displaced Central Africans. We are also providing latrines and other hygiene equipment such as garbage bins and soap, and working with the population to raise awareness on sanitation and diseases.

We are working closely with local organizations to distribute food, cash and food vouchers to the most vulnerable families.

We are also joining forces with other aid groups to call on the international community to help protect civilians., to help people affected by the crisis to meet their basic needs, promote reconciliation and address the urgent security needs of women and girls.

The situation

Since December 2013, more than 200,000 people have left the country, seeking refuge in neighboring countries. Inside the Central African Republic. 2.5 million people, out of a total population of 4.6 million, need assistance. More than 550,000 of them have had to leave their home and flee. They survive in safer villages and in displaced camps.

Armed conflict continues to threaten the lives of civilians and has sent food prices soaring. Some villages have seen their population tripled. Food is scarce. Many families are now reduced to eating only one meal a day. Violence across the country has kept farmers from accessing their fields and the harvest will be insufficient.

Those living in the rapidly expanding camps are in desperate need of clean water and sanitation.

Please help us meet urgent needs in CAR and other crisis situations by donating to this appeal.
