Turkana by night: New beginnings in Kenya (photo gallery)

Photographer Alejandro Chaskielberg traveled to Turkana, Kenya with Oxfam to take photographs using moonlight supplemented with artificial lighting, showing snapshots of everyday life of communities who try to cope with drought.

Oxfam has initiated a gardening project in 3 villages in the northern areas of Turkana, Riokomor, Karebur, and Nayenaeemeyan. The aim is to boost 400 families' incomes and improve their diets by creating plots of land suitable for growing vegetables for household consumption and sale. Oxfam supported beneficiaries with farming implements such as hoes, rakes, watering cans, fencing materials and seeds. The plots of land are irrigated by small water points, either wells or hand pumps, located nearby.

This project is specifically aimed at supporting women in pastoralist communities. Nearly always solely responsible for finding food for their children, this project aims to help mothers improve nutrition for their children while also earning them a small income from the excess vegetables which can then be used on other household expenses and education. 88% of those involved in the project are women.
