For the second time in less than a year, tens of thousands of people have seen their crops destroyed and been forced to leave their homes due to flooding in southern Mozambique.
The situation
The flooding in the Zambezi River valley has made homeless about 100,000, while hundreds of thousands more have lost assets such as food stocks and crops. An estimated 150,000 hectares of agricultural land has been lost.
Delivering assistance to affected communities has been very difficult and some isolated places cannot be reached even by boat, meaning helicopters are essential for delivering vital supplies and humanitarian teams.
What Oxfam is doing
Working with local partner organizations, we are supplying clean water and sanitation facilities to 58,000 people in resettlement centers and other flood-hit locations. We are also distributing essential household and hygiene items and plastic sheeting.
