A million refugees urgently need shelter, food and water
Rescuing the peace in Sudan - gallery
Sudan's Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed in 2005, yet southern Sudan remains one of the poorest regions on earth.
There are fears that unless the international community acts now, Sudan could once again face serious instability. Our report Rescuing the Peace in Southern Sudan from Oxfam calls for immediate action to bolster the fragile peace process.
Caroline Gluck, our Humantarian Press Officer, visited the area in January 2010. Her photos show a people still hoping peace will bring economic benefits and development.

These children, playing on an abandoned tank, were all born during Sudan's long civil war. But with political will and urgent engagement by the international community, they now have the chance to grow up in peace.
Much of the violence is occurring between south Sudan's many tribes; and it's often linked to conflicts over resources, especially cattle and land.
Rebecca Konjo and her family search for wild grass to eat. Their chickens and livestock were looted in attacks by a rival tribe, and their crops destroyed.
Many stores and homes remain shuttered up in Wulu county, Lakes State, after two attacks by a rival tribe.
Mary Are and her family are now displaced and living in Nyamini Village, Central Equatoria. They were forced to flee their homes after a rival ethnic group carried out a raid, taking their livestock and killing 11 people.
