The World Food Program (WFP) in Niger, the country worst-hit by the West Africa food crisis, has been forced to make an "agonizing" decision to abandon plans to provide emergency food to families with children over the age of two because of a huge funding shortfall.

Fadoul Acheul is a farmer and he is used to having to find ways of surviving though periods of drought. At the age of 53, and with 8 children, he has today sold the one asset he had left: his prized ram.

Over 18 million people across West and Central Africa were affected by a food crisis caused by drought, a failure of several crops, and sharp rises in food prices. Oxfam reached more than 1 million people with humanitarian aid during 2012.

Small-scale farmers and pastoralists in Ethiopia are likely to bear the brunt of the negative impacts of climate change in the region, which will include increasing poverty, water scarcity, and food insecurity, according to a new Oxfam report.

In the village of Djaya in Chad, more than 20 women dig the earth at the village entrance. Everyone calls them the “termitières” because they are experts at finding the anthills that have the most seeds in the area.

Food distribution at a community canteen

Clotide Anilus, a 38-year-old mother of three, is one of the beneficiaries of Oxfam-funded community canteens. Through these canteens, Oxfam provides free hot meals to 4,500 earthquake survivors in the area.
