Typhoon Bopha, known locally as Pablo, has hit the southern Philippines. More than 360,000 people are now staying in evacuation centers or with friends and relatives. Oxfam has started an emergency response in the hardest hit communities.
Oxfam and its humanitarian partners in the Philippines, the Humanitarian Response Consortium, or HRC, have begun an emergency response targeting communities hardest-hit by Typhoon Bopha (known locally as Pablo) on the southern island of Mindanao.
From Samoa to the Philippines to Indonesia and Vietnam, Oxfam has been providing clean water, blankets, hygiene kits and other vital provisions to local communities that desperately need them.
Oxfam will send an 11-strong team of aid experts to the storm-hit province of Kon Tum in central Vietnam, hit by typhoon Ketsana last night. They will carry out an assessment of needs and start initial response work immediately.
International aid agency Oxfam is sending in teams to the flooded areas in the Philippines and gearing up its aid response. It has suspended its on-going long-term development programme work in the Philippines in order to mobilise its resources for the humanitarian operation.
