Ten leading aid agencies today called for a 'surge' in the humanitarian effort to help 10 million people at risk of acute hunger across the Sahel region of West and Central Africa.
International aid agency Oxfam welcomes the European Commission’s new aid package of 24 million euros for Niger and other countries in the Sahel region of West Africa, which was announced today in Brussels.
In a drought prone area like Mauritania, the issue of water access, in quantity but also in quality, is a big challenge. Oxfam livelihood program works to improve the communities’ access to water.
Supporting community vegetable gardens is one of the ways that Oxfam responded to last year’s drought in Mauritania. “It feels as though we were blind before Oxfam came here and gave us sight.” says Salika, a beneficiary of the scheme.
