Compromise on the EU budget will put millions of people on the line

Oxfam estimates that the proposed EU aid cuts could be enough to have lifted more than 4.6 million people in the poorest countries out of extreme poverty. The proposed cuts to emergency aid alone would mean the EU is turning a blind eye on the plight of 150 million people affected by disasters or conflicts.

European Parliament adopts regulation to shed light on shady derivatives markets

Today the European Parliament gave the green light to the European Markets Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR) designed to regulate shady ‘over the counter’ (OTC) derivatives. NGOs welcomed the introduction of clearing and reporting obligations for these financial products as a crucial step towards regulating vital agricultural commodity derivatives markets.
