Céline Charveriat, Head of Oxfam International's Make Trade Fair Campaign said: "The EU and US must make concrete commitments on pro-development trade reform to breathe life back into failing negotiations. We need more than warm words and vague promises: the lives of thousands of poor farmers are at stake.

"Mr Mandelson and his US counterpart, Mr. Portman have a lot of power and a very clear choice. They can continue the trans-Atlantic standoff where each attempts to give less that the other, or they can agree to work together to try to realise the potential of these talks to deliver for development and poverty reduction.

"The two trade superpowers must not use this bilateral meeting to agree a deal that suits them, then expect everyone else to sign up. Rather, they should take the opportunity to create the circumstances in which a deal that benefits everyone can be done."
