Bill Nighy’s place in the overseas development story began in 2005 when he played the lead role in "Girl in a Café," a Richard Curtis film made to support Make Poverty History and the Gleneagles G8 (2005).
Bill played a fictional finance minister attending a fictional G8 Summit. He was deeply affected by the issues raised in the film particularly "the unfairness of a world that allows some to have more than they could ever need while others don’t have enough food to eat, water to drink or basic healthcare and education." Bill was nominated at the 2006 Golden Globe Awards for his performance in the production, while the film received Emmy wins.
In May 2007 Oxfam invited Bill to visit health and education projects in Tanzania on the eve of the German G8. The trip resulted in wide spread UK media coverage, including an appearance on BBC R4 Today Program when Bill debated the merits of aid with a former representative of the World Bank.
Bill became an Oxfam Ambassador in August 2007. He continues to be committed and will attend the G8 Summit in Japan this year to represent Oxfam and continue to help advocate on behalf of the world’s poorest people. He will also host a fundraising dinner for Oxfam projects in Tanzania later this year.
