Emmanuel Jal is a Sudanese musician and former child soldier. At the age of 11, Emmanuel was rescued by a British aid worker and taken to Kenya where he spent the rest of his childhood and is now based in the UK.
A passionate supporter of the Control Arms campaign, Emmanuel has been working with Oxfam since 2005.
In September 2006, Emmanuel traveled back to Kenya with Oxfam to highlight the effects of the spiralling global arms trade. In October of that year Emmanuel traveled to New York as a representative of the Control Arms campaign to the United Nations, ahead of a historic vote by world governments to start work on an Arms Trade Treaty.
In June 2008 Emmanuel supported the band, Faithless, at a gig in Berlin calling for countries to keep their promises of aid, trade and debt ahead of the G8 meeting that month.
Emmanuel's powerful new memoir, War Child: A child soldier's story will be published by St. Martin's Press on 3 February 2009. The book gives a real sense of why Emmanuel Jal is such an incredible young man and someone whose voice will be heard for many years to come, both through his music and his humanitarian work.
Emmanuel is a truly committed supporter to Oxfam's work and we cannot thank him enough for the work he has done.
