Rahul Bose is an Indian actor and has been a dedicated supporter of Oxfam’s work since 2004.
As part of Oxfam’s Health and Education For All campaign, Rahul has been an active voice in urging the Indian government to keep its promise of allocating 9% of the GDP to education and health in the country. He teamed up with school children in a public rally to call for more teachers and better school facilities. Rahul has also spoken to the Indian media on several occasions to advocate for more qualified teachers in schools and nurses and doctors in health institutions.
After the Tsunami, Rahul supported Oxfam in emergency relief and rehabilitation in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Known for his social conscience, Rahul stood up for a violence-free life for women by participating in the launch of the ‘We Can’ campaign in India. He spoke to hundreds of young women and men at the launch about changing the way people think about violence against women.
In 2007, Rahul and Hollywood actress, Scarlett Johansson, another Global Ambassador for Oxfam, met during Scarlett’s visit to India and reinforced their commitment to the organization’s work.
In Rahul’s own words: "I pledge to use this opportunity as Global Ambassador for Oxfam to serve the poor, the disempowered, the forgotten of this planet in small, but real ways. I feel especially proud to be associated with an organization that considers it imperative to educate girls in Mali, secure land rights for women farmers in India, and start a movement of female peace builders in Ethiopia. In a world of ceaseless hyperbole it will be my endeavor to always under-promise and over-deliver."
