New UN high level panel on post-Millennium Development Goals

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, has appointed President Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia, President Yudhoyono of Indonesia and Prime Minister David Cameron of the United Kingdom to chair a High Level Panel on post-Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

They will lead a process to start identifying a new international framework for development when the current MDGs expire in 2015.

Reacting to the announcement, international Oxfam agency said:

"The panel has a huge responsibility to shape global development goals that enable all people to live in dignity and share in prosperity, within the bounds of the planet's natural resources."

"The poorest countries should be in the driving seat of this process, and all nations must meet and exceed the MDGs with the utmost urgency."
