Pakistan floods: Oxfam thanks supporters

In 2010 Pakistan was hit by its worst natural disaster. More than 1,750 people are thought to have died, with an estimated 18-20 million people affected by the floods.

One year after the floods, more than 800,000 families remain without permanent shelter and more than a million people remain in need of food assistance. These unmet needs must be addressed as a matter of urgency. Moreover, Pakistan is still not prepared for this year’s monsoon floods and other natural disasters.

Over the past year we have reached over 2.4 million people with humanitarian aid in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh and Azad Jammu Kashmir. Our response has included the provision of:

• Safe drinking water
• Sanitation and hygiene facilities
• Tents
• Cash grants

We also ran cash-for-work programs, so that people in need of help were paid to carry out vital rebuilding and rehabilitation work.
