Oxfam calls them partial, hugely expensive – As debate heats up on whether aid air drops should be used in Mynamar, international aid agency Oxfam said today (13 May) that often when the international community has chosen to parachute in aid to a disaster or conflict zone it has been hugely expensive and failed to reach the most vulnerable people.

In response to the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked southwestern China on Monday afternoon (12 May), Oxfam Hong Kong has allocated $1.5 million for emergency relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction, and is in contact with local government agencies and community organizations in affected areas to coordinate this emergency response.

International agency Oxfam said today (11 May) that in the coming weeks and months the lives of up to 1.5 million people are in danger in the Myanmar cyclone zone due to the risk of disease and a public health catastrophe if clean water and sanitation is not urgently provided.

As governments from all over the world meet in Paris to discuss social health protection in developing countries, a group of NGOs has issued a report warning that health insurance continues to exclude the poor. The argument that health insurance could fill financing gaps to ensure health care in poor countries is now being strongly promoted by northern governments and international institutions.

As its initial response to the Myanmar cyclone Oxfam today committed up to $500,000 and put a team on standby. The international community needs to be quick both to respond to this crisis and to ensure the needs of those most affected are met. Oxfam currently does not run operational programs in Myanmar, and so its aid effort will be channeled through partner organizations with a mixture of cash funding, technical expertise and equipment where required.

Aid agencies in Chad, including Oxfam International, mourn the loss of Pascal Marlinge, the Country Director of Save the Children UK, who was killed on Thursday by bandits. His death is a tragedy. We send our heartfelt condolences to Pascal’s family and to Save the Children UK.

The new code will help increase protection of human rights and the environment while promoting investment.
