As governments from all over the world meet in Paris to discuss social health protection in developing countries, a group of NGOs has issued a report warning that health insurance continues to exclude the poor. The argument that health insurance could fill financing gaps to ensure health care in poor countries is now being strongly promoted by northern governments and international institutions.

As its initial response to the Myanmar cyclone Oxfam today committed up to $500,000 and put a team on standby. The international community needs to be quick both to respond to this crisis and to ensure the needs of those most affected are met. Oxfam currently does not run operational programs in Myanmar, and so its aid effort will be channeled through partner organizations with a mixture of cash funding, technical expertise and equipment where required.

Aid agencies in Chad, including Oxfam International, mourn the loss of Pascal Marlinge, the Country Director of Save the Children UK, who was killed on Thursday by bandits. His death is a tragedy. We send our heartfelt condolences to Pascal’s family and to Save the Children UK.

Oxfam International assists 24,000 people with water and sanitation. Two months since President Correa declared a national emergency in Ecuador following floods that affected large parts of the country, nearly 10,000 people remain homeless and hundreds of thousands more have limited access to clean water, said international agency Oxfam.

World leaders at a UN meeting in Switzerland must go beyond immediate aid to address the root causes of the global food price crisis, said international agency Oxfam today. "Aid is urgently needed to address the immediate threat to poor people posed by higher food prices but money is not enough. World leaders must take this opportunity to address structural problems such as under-investment in agriculture and unfair trade rules, which are exacerbating the problem," said Celine Charveriat, Oxfam International's Deputy Advocacy Director.

More than 7.5 million children, adults, teachers and campaigners took part in the Global Campaign for Education's "World's Biggest Lesson." All over the world politicians and ministers went back to school and were taught the lesson by children, before being asked what they planned to do to make sure everyone gets a quality education.
