Visits to Africa spur on Kristin Davis to support Oxfam Unwrapped
Following visits to Southern and Eastern Africa with international development organization Oxfam, “Sex and the City” star and Oxfam Global Ambassador Kristin Davis is encouraging shoppers to buy their holiday gifts from Oxfam Unwrapped – an alternative gift catalog that helps you give something special to your friends or family while giving something extra special to people living in poverty.
“During my trips I’ve met some incredible people whose lives are changing because of Oxfam Unwrapped,” said Kristin, who this year traveled to South Africa and Uganda with Oxfam.
“Earlier this year I met a woman in Uganda who, thanks to Oxfam Unwrapped, was able to start up a small business selling groundnuts and is now making enough money to send her grandchildren to school.”
“When people are without food, water, shelter or the opportunity to support and educate their families, your Oxfam Unwrapped gift will be providing real and practical support,” added Kristin.
Here’s how it works: shoppers choose the gift and personalize a card online, their friend or loved one receives a card in the mail, and the gift helps someone in need.
There is an array of gifts that you can give to do good. Make the world a greener place by planting 100 trees or giving a can of worms.
Choose from life-sustaining animals: a goat, a dozen baby chicks, a pair of oxen, or a donkey. Or help someone start a new business. These and other essential items, such as emergency toilets, school uniforms, and water purifiers make a real difference to communities in need.
Proceeds from these symbolic gifts go to fund Oxfam’s efforts to create lasting solutions to poverty and injustice in more than 120 countries.
“Oxfam Unwrapped gifts reflect the real work that Oxfam does around the world to promote ways to make a living, provide emergency relief, and improve nutrition,” said Chloe Irvine, Oxfam Media Officer. “Whether it’s an environmental champion or a well-meaning couch potato in your life, a gift from Unwrapped is a great way to support our work in poor countries.”
“With Oxfam Unwrapped, you can help someone living in extreme poverty while also giving a gift to someone in your life. And it doesn’t take a lot of money to help make a difference,” said Kristin.
"$18 can provide three water jugs that can help a mother give her children clean water to drink, or three mosquito nets that can help save a child's life.
“If you want to give a present that helps people, Oxfam Unwrapped is for you. Giving through Oxfam Unwrapped creates a powerful connection between you, the friend you gift, and the person at the end of the line who truly benefits.”
