Example of Oxfam programs
With Oxfam's help, women become entrepreneurs in Khartoum market
–
Awadia Abbis has managed to help all five of her children attend university with her earnings. She is a member of the Tea and Food Sellers Cooperative operating in the sprawling, dusty Elshabe market in Khartoum. It’s one of three women’s cooperatives that Oxfam's partner, the Sudan Development Association or SDA, helped to launch.
Ethiopian women rediscover role as peace builders
–
Women bear the brunt of hardship when violence rips through a community, leaving husbands dead, homes in ashes, livestock looted. Tato Boru leads an area women’s peace council which an Oxfam local partner helped to found. By raising awareness of the suffering produced by conflicts, women help find alternatives to violence.
Ethiopia: growing crops and opportunities
–
With the help of Oxfam and its partner, the Selam Environmental Development Association, a series of small-scale irrigation projects has planted hope among farmers in eight villages in the Lake Ziway region. It’s not just crops that the irrigation is bringing to life; it is also nourishing the business acumen of some of the farmers.
Ethiopia: the road to self-reliance
–
In the Horn of Africa, Oxfam is pioneering a new approach to building self-reliance that is becoming a model for others in Africa and around the world. By focusing on a community's strengths and supporting a process called "Asset-Based Community-Driven" development, or ABCD, tremendous advances are being made.
