Elva Abad/ OxfamAn earthquake in the early morning of 16 August off the coast of southern Peru measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale has claimed more than 500 lives and caused widespread damage.

At least 150,000 people were affected, and aftershocks continued to be felt for days after the initial quake.

Oxfam's response

Oxfam teams and partner organizations in Peru are providing assistance to the affected population, especially in rural areas, where the need for water and sanitation is most desperate. In the areas of Pisco and Ica, where there was extensive damage, medical supplies, temporary shelter, water and sanitation services are being provided.

A temporary Oxfam headquarters has been established in the Pisco area. We were especially concerned about people in affected rural areas because their houses are extremely vulnerable and they are harder to reach. Our initial plans were to provide water, sanitation and shelter to 2,500 families (12,500 people).

We'll post news updates and stories from Peru as the situation develops. Thank you to everyone who has donated to our relief efforts!
