Consultancy: Building Resilience in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands of Northern Kenya (INT2441)

Oxfam Great Britain - 16 May 2016 - 8:20
Region: HECA, Division: International, Job Type: ConsultancyProject Context

The Turkana region is an area of arid and semi-arid land (ASAL) covering some 77,000 square kilometres of northern Kenya. Of the region’s one million inhabitants, 60 percent are pastoralists and a further 20 percent are agro-pastoralists, so households’ livelihood strategies are highly vulnerable to various shocks, stresses, and uncertainties. However, households in Turkana have faced increasingly frequent and severe droughts in recent years, associated with global climatic events such as El Niño/La Niña and possibly also long-term climate change. The impact of these climatic shocks has been exacerbated by sharp variation in the prices of basic goods, such as food and fuel, as well as threats to security. This has devastating implications for people’s wellbeing.
