A desperate and largely unknown humanitarian crisis is deteriorating in the Lake Chad Basin region of West Africa, forcing millions of people to flee their homes and leaving millions more in need of humanitarian assistance. Oxfam is providing life-saving support but help is urgently needed to prevent the crisis turning into a catastrophe.
Governments give promising signal to acknowledge shipping industry role in climate change
As the meeting of the International Maritime Organization held in London this week draws to a close Oxfam's EU Climate Change Policy Advisor Tim Gore said:
"Governments have given a promising signal this week that they're beginning to take the shipping industry's important role in tackling climate change seriously. The agreement to hold a special meeting in the Spring focused on measures which can control greenhouse gas emissions, that could raise vital funds to help communities adapt, is a ray of hope for poor people struggling to cope with climate change.
The shipping industry must play its part in raising the tens of billions needed for a new UN climate fund to ensure poor people get the resources they need, without raiding existing aid budgets."
