Oxfam reaction to Africa Progress Panel Report 2013: Equity in Extractives
Oxfam International Executive Director Winnie Byanyima said:
“Oxfam welcomes this high-level push for transparency and accountability in the oil and mining sector.
“As the report highlights, Africa’s economic growth over the last decade has been largely fuelled by a resource extraction boom that has bypassed the poor.
“African governments must use oil, gas and mining to raise revenue, but this boom must not steamroll the rights of communities living on top ofAfrica’s mineral wealth.
“It is important that local communities are informed and consulted about extractive industry projects that affect them.”
