A desperate and largely unknown humanitarian crisis is deteriorating in the Lake Chad Basin region of West Africa, forcing millions of people to flee their homes and leaving millions more in need of humanitarian assistance. Oxfam is providing life-saving support but help is urgently needed to prevent the crisis turning into a catastrophe.
The Female Food Hero 2012 competition was bigger and better than ever. Celebrating the achievements of women food producers, the competition used reality TV, radio debates, and public SMS votes to find Tanzania's ultimate Female Food Hero.
Martha Mwasu Waziri was chosen Mama Shujaa wa Chakula 2012 (Female Food Hero). She won 10 million Tanzanian Shillings ($6,325) to buy farming equipment of her choice.
Martha is from Dodoma Region where using environmental protection methods, learned from Inades Formation, she has managed to reclaim 18 acres of land that had been eroded by a river. Now it is productive farm land. With the increasing environmental pressures from climate change and over-use of land we will need many more heroes like Martha who can literally save our land.
