A desperate and largely unknown humanitarian crisis is deteriorating in the Lake Chad Basin region of West Africa, forcing millions of people to flee their homes and leaving millions more in need of humanitarian assistance. Oxfam is providing life-saving support but help is urgently needed to prevent the crisis turning into a catastrophe.
Oxfam Ambassador and photographer Helena Christensen is back from Turkana, Northern Kenya -- one of the many regions in the Horn of Africa that have been affected by the severe drought that has put over 13 million people at risk.
Helena witnessed how unpredictable weather and recurring hikes in food prices are having a devastating impact on the ability of women pastoralists to feed their families and send their children to school. These women have been forced to change their lives and find alternative ways to make their living.
