Even before the coronavirus crisis struck, people in the Middle East and North Africa were protesting against the injustice and inequality wrought by a decade of austerity. The pandemic and the lockdown measures taken by governments have paralysed economies and threaten to tip millions of people into poverty. This paper argues that if another decade of pain is to be averted, governments need to take immediate action to reduce inequality.

The 21 billionaires in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), all of them men, saw their wealth increase by nearly $10 billion since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, almost double the estimated amount required to rebuild Lebanon's shattered capital, while 45 million more people in the region could be pushed to poverty as a result of the pandemic, a new Oxfam report revealed today.

Young people ages 15-24 account for a sixth of the global population, 1.2 billion people whose lives, educations, careers and communities will be forever transformed by Covid-19. So why are they not being included in policymaking decisions that will continue to affect their lives for generations to come?

Today the tally of COVID-19 deaths has surpassed 100,000 in Brazil ―the second country in the world to do so after the United States― with many of these deaths avoidable but for the Brazilian government’s inefficient and disoriented response to the pandemic.

COVID-19 is putting the lives of 45 million people who belong to 800 indigenous peoples at risk, warned Oxfam today.

The recovery fund and long-term EU budget agreed today do not match the urgency of our current situation and the challenges ahead, said Oxfam.

While the whole world attempts to save itself from the pandemic, the indigenous peoples of Latin America are dying. Abandoned by the state and with no adequate comprehensive healthcare services or clean water, they are extremely vulnerable to the virus that is fast expanding throughout the continent.

“Today’s lack of progress on debt relief is as irresponsible as it is underwhelming. Merely encouraging private sector creditors and multilateral banks to participate in the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI) is woefully inadequate and a dereliction of duty. The G20 is in denial of the scale of response needed to address the worse global crisis in a century," said Jaime Atienza, Oxfam International’s Debt Policy Lead, in response to the communiqué of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting.
