Typhoon Haiyan was one of the most powerful storms to ever make landfall.
Six months after the storm hit the Philippines, life for villagers on Bantayan Island in Cebu province remains a struggle. The storm had a devastating impact on the fishing and seaweed industry, destroying essential equipment and leaving thousands of people without basic needs and the means to recover their livelihoods. It also caused extensive environmental damage, shifting coral beds, tearing down coconut trees, and ripping mangrove forests apart – all of which will have a long-term impact on ecosystems and the communities who rely on these ecosystems for food and employment.
Oxfam is working to support the immediate and long-term needs of affected communities through strategic programme and advocacy work. These are some testimonies from short-term relief to medium-term early recovery work which also demonstrate the continued needs of affected communities.
