In reaction to the official announcement that David Malpass was selected by the World Bank's Board of Directors as the next president of the institution, Nadia Daar, Oxfam International's Head of Washington DC Office made the following statement:
"While we are disappointed in the flawed selection process, we nevertheless look forward to working with Mr. Malpass and see where he will take this important global institution at a time of extremely challenging economic, political and climate realities.
"During the first days of his tenure, Mr. Malpass must especially demonstrate a firm commitment to maintaining the leadership of the World Bank in addressing climate change, including implementing and building on his predecessor's commitments in the lead up to and after the historic Paris Agreement.
"Today's world is one of shameful economic and gender inequality resulting from a continued imbalance of power over decision-making at all levels. We urge Mr. Malpass to champion policies that reduce inequalities, such as investing strongly in public health and education, promoting progressive and fair tax rules at the domestic and international levels, and furthering an agenda of accountability and inclusive, sustainable development that works for all, not just the few.
“Given the importance of this position and this institution, especially for the world’s poorest, we had hoped for a real selection process, not just a forgone conclusion. Perhaps this will change next time around.”
