Teachers across South Sudan continue to play a critical role in ensuring children can access quality education despite ongoing challenges, including limited resources and professional development opportunities.
To support educators, Oxfam in South Sudan, in collaboration with the Ministry of General Education and Instruction, the Disabled Agency for Rehabilitation and Development (DARD), and Luigi Giussani Foundation (LGF) Uganda, is implementing the Regional Teacher Initiative for Africa (RTIA), funded by the European Union and its Member States.
The two-year project (December 2024–November 2026) operates in Awerial, Wulu, and Rumbek East Counties, reaching 160 teachers across 16 schools and an estimated 9,443 learners.
Over the past year, RTIA has strengthened teacher skills and wellbeing through professional development training, mentorship for 34 female Teachers Networks, psychosocial support for 160 educators, training for school leaders, and capacity building for tutors and supervisors, among other initiatives.
As the project progresses into its second year, the focus is increasingly on the impact of these investments on teacher confidence, classroom practice, and learner outcomes. The experiences of teachers such as Kech and Achol form our stories of impact pages, demonstrate how targeted support is helping educators strengthen their skills and remain committed to teaching.
