World Bank flagship report downplays inequality and promotes the dismantling of worker's rights

Publié: 12th octobre 2018

The World Bank today published the 2019 edition of their World Development Report, entitled “The Changing Nature of Work.”

In response, Nadia Daar, head of Oxfam International’s Washington office said:

“It is irresponsible for the World Bank to promote the deregulation of labor and the dismantling of the rights that workers have long fought for.

“The report downplays the severity of inequality and contradicts internationally agreed labor standards. Just last week, the IMF said higher minimum wages are needed to counteract extreme inequality.

Our latest research shows that many countries are making the right policy choices, like boosting minimum wages. The World Bank should be doing everything possible to encourage policies that help workers and reduce inequality.”
