In reaction to the pledges made today at the Brussels-Syria donor conference, Oxfam Syria’s Country Director, Moutaz Adham, said
“The money pledged confirms fears that donors are not listening to the pleas of the millions of Syrians who have fled their homes and had their lives torn apart by ten years of conflict.
“While violence may have subsided in some parts, millions of Syrians in Syria and the region are still struggling to survive and are now facing the impact of a global pandemic, spiralling unemployment and economic collapse. Many stated at the Brussels Conference that aid was needed now more than ever. Yet this funding sends a bleak message to those trying to find a future after ten years of darkness and despair.”

This month marks ten-years of the Syrian conflict. Although the fighting in Syria has decreased, Syrians are now struggling with a multifaceted crisis: repercussions of the prolonged conflict and coronavirus pandemic, deteriorating situation in neighbouring Lebanon, rampant unemployment, sanctions, a nosediving economy, and rising inflation. According to estimates:
- Over 80% of Syrians now live in poverty
- 1.1 million people need humanitarian aid to survive
- 12.4 million people now go to sleep hungry (almost 60% of the population) compared to 9.3 million people in early 2020 .
