Oxfam and partners address gender inequality in education at 67th Commission on the Status of Women

Publicado: 7th Marzo 2023

The 67th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW67) is being held March 6-17.

Oxfam, along with partner organizations, will engage by hosting one official side event and 12 parallel events under the NGO CSW Forum. This year the CSW priority theme addresses challenges to women’s rights and equity related to education in the digital age and the review theme looks at the empowerment of rural women and girls.

Oxfam is working with women leaders attending from countries including Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Mexico, Brazil, Morocco, Mozambique, Jordan, and more.

Oxfam submitted a written statement to the UN Secretary General, which has been circulated ahead of the CSW67 and will deliver an oral statement during the session.

Brenda Mofya, Head of Oxfam’s New York office, said:

“The right to education is fundamental to gender equality and the realization of rights of women, girls and gender diverse people. The insistence on technological innovation often carries with it risks of privatization or a heavy dependence on education technology instead of investments needed in the fundamentals necessary for public education.

“Digital inequalities pose a significant challenge for women and girls – particularly those in rural areas – and addressing these disparities is vital to promote equal access to educational opportunities. Oxfam has put forward recommendations for UN Member States, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that every woman and girl has access to quality education and the opportunity to achieve their full potential.”
