On the 4th anniversary of the youngest state in the world, South Sudan is experiencing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Almost 8 million people, two-thirds of the total population, are food insecure while more than 2 million people have been forced to flee their homes because of the fighting. 

4.8 million people in South Sudan are facing severe hunger in the middle of the harvest season, according to the latest Integrated Phase Classification (IPC) update. This is an ominous sign of a food crisis fast spiralling out of control and urgent action is needed. 

Massive displacement and cross-border fighting are spilling over neighbouring countries, worsening the already catastrophic crisis.

People in South Sudan’s Pibor county are forced to survive on wild vegetables, and desert dates as the number of people dying from starvation rises. With torrential rains halting aid flights, the situation could get much worse quickly, warned Oxfam today.  

More than half the population of South Sudan – 6.6 million people – are severely hungry, including 2.2 million people at risk of starvation. Yet the humanitarian response remains woefully underfunded and without an urgent increase in aid now, 7.7 million people or two-thirds of the population will face severe food shortages next year, Oxfam warned today.

The leaders of South Sudan have failed to set aside their differences, and fighting continues to ravage the country as a famine looms. 

The cholera outbreak in South Sudan is a wake up call for the government and the aid world to redouble efforts to tackle a worsening cycle of misery. Money is urgently needed to fund an immediate surge in action to tackle the disease.

We are seriously concerned that a lack of food may peak in May and June reaching emergency levels in South Sudan.
