Oxfam is responding to a major earthquake off the coast of Ecuador. We will shortly be sending teams to the area to assess the extent of damage and how Oxfam can best assist the Government response.

Oxfam staff in Ecuador are working with the government to establish the effective distribution system of safe water in Portoviejo and Pedernales, two of the communities worst hit by the 7.8 earthquake that struck the northern coast of the country on April 16th.

As fighting continues around the border areas of Sudan and the soon-to-be independent Republic of South Sudan, international aid organization Oxfam called upon all parties to cease hostilities and allow humanitarian access to affected civilians.

South Sudan is facing its most violent year since the end of the civil war in 2005, international agency Oxfam warned today, and it urged the UN Security Council, as it visits the region, to ensure that civilians are better protected.
