Yemen is a country in continuous crisis. More than half its population live below the poverty line and are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

After ten years of war, Yemen remains the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Almost 4 million people have been displaced by the fighting and two out of every three people – more than 21 million in total – are in need of humanitarian assistance. We are delivering essential aid but we urgently need your help to do more.

This briefing shares the experiences of some of the 250 people interviewed by Oxfam in Yemen in February 2016 and shows how a year of intense conflict has created one of the world’s biggest humanitarian emergencies and risks pushing millions into famine.

Since the end of April 2017, Yemen has been experiencing its worst recorded outbreak of suspected cholera in a single year. By mid-August, more than 500,000 cases were recorded. Significant and urgent scale up in all areas of intervention is needed.

International aid agency Oxfam today warned that the conflict-driven emergency in Yemen could soon ignite into a full-blown humanitarian crisis unless immediate action is taken to stop the fighting between government forces and Houthi rebels in the north of the country.

This briefing calls for action by all actors in the conflict and by the international community to protect the civilian population from the effects of the war and to alleviate the food crisis. It calls for renewed momentum towards a peace deal which is inclusive of women, civil society, youth and minorities, and which begins with an immediate, nationwide ceasefire.

UN announces that hunger levels in Yemen have jumped by 20 percent since June 2016. 

Food has doubled in price and fuel has quadrupled in some areas as basic commodities run dangerously low in Yemen, warns Oxfam.  

Tens of thousands of people will be left without aid in Yemen’s hunger crisis unless more money is urgently given to the aid effort, Oxfam and Islamic Relief warned today. Nearly a quarter of the population are in need of emergency aid to survive because they do not have enough food to eat.

In response to today’s Virtual High-Level Pledging Event on the Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen, Ferran Puig, Oxfam’s Country Director in Yemen said: “The world must not look away while Yemen suffers. Even before the Ukraine conflict drove up food prices and threatened food imports, two thirds of major aid programmes had already been reduced or closed because of lack of funding."
