The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making space of the UN, where 193 nations meet to vote on the wide range of global issues the United Nations addresses.  Every September, Heads of States, UN leaders, and civil society convene at the General Assembly High Level Week  in New York for several days of meetings and Heads of State addresses at the High-Level Debate. Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All

UNGA 2026 Theme

This 81st session takes place against a backdrop of stalled progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, escalating conflicts, shrinking civic space, rising inequality, rollbacks of gender rights, and accelerating climate impacts.

UNGA81 will be a pivotal political moment. In addition to the High-Level General Debate and negotiations on peace and security, sustainable development, financing, climate action, and global governance, the session will help shape discussions around the future direction of UN reform and the selection of the next United Nations Secretary-General. It will coincide with Climate Week NYC, the United States' G20 Presidency, and France's G7 Presidency, creating important opportunities to influence global debates across multilateral, economic, and climate agendas.
