New set of EU migration policy proposals first step toward more safe and legal routes

Published: 6th April 2016

In reaction to the European Commission's new migration policy proposals, Oxfam’s EU migration lead, Sara Tesorieri, said:

"Today's proposals from the European Commission are a first step toward creating safe and legal routes for people on the move. Now member states must stop pursuing a fragmented approach and instead take a big leap forward to achieve common EU solutions that are going to put people first.

"Europe's policy of border control by interdiction has failed everyone, while putting desperate people in needless danger. The EU has turned what should have been a manageable surge in numbers of people arriving at Europe's borders into a humanitarian disaster. Europe needs a more sane and humane system for managing migration, one that creates opportunities for people rather than for criminal networks of smugglers."
