The joint US-China statement on new domestic policy commitments and a vision for a global climate change deal underscores the importance the world’s two largest emitters place on solving the climate crisis, says Oxfam, but collective action is needed.

Poor countries will today leave the UN climate change negotiations in Doha with little more than they arrived with, because developed countries failed to take any meaningful collective action to prevent and address the most harmful impacts of climate change.

International climate talks (in Bonn, Germany 1 – 12 June) must ensure that a climate finance proposal meets the needs of the world’s most vulnerable countries, and negotiations must move forward quickly if a global deal is to be secured in time to avoid a human catastrophe.

UN climate talks are off the life-support machine, following a last-minute agreement that gives the Kyoto Protocol a lifeline. It establishes a global Climate Fund and, while falling short of the emissions cuts needed, lays out a path to move towards them.

An Oxfam analysis of policies and public investments in six countries shows that women farmers are not getting the resources they need to feed their families and communities and adapt to climate change.

The roadmap, while long overdue, is a step forward in the world’s efforts to adapt to and combat climate change. Unfortunately, the roadmap’s projection to double the financial support to help countries adapt to climate change is nowhere near enough to ensure the needs of the most vulnerable are met, said Isabel Kreisler.
