In response to today’s Virtual High-Level Side Event on Yemen, Muhsin Siddiquey, Oxfam’s Country Director in Yemen said: “After years of conflict, two-thirds of the population are in need of humanitarian assistance, one in eight people are displaced, and levels of hunger and utmost poverty continue to increase. In this context, the country cannot cope with the further crisis of COVID-19."

Oxfam and 9 other NGOs implore all parties in the conflict to abide by the terms of the ceasefire and to resume peace negotiations.

On 22 December, at around 1am, Oxfam’s office in Al Dhale’e was hit by two RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades). One hit the roof, while the other hit the office gate. Neither of the guards on duty were injured and there were no other staff present. The offices of several other agencies in Al Dhale’e were also targeted at around the same time.

Reacting to the announcement on the withdrawal of Houthis and government forces from Hudaydah port in Yemen, Oxfam’s Yemen Country Director, Muhsin Siddiquey said:“The redeployment of forces from Hudaydah, as part of the Stockholm Agreement, and under UN observation would be a welcome step. However, the humanitarian situation in Yemen remains dire. With 14 million people on the brink of famine, Yemenis desperately need all parties to agree to an immediate country wide ceasefire and return to negotiations with a commitment to ending the war and achieving a lasting peace.”
