Today, the European Parliament agreed a resolution calling for a “joint, ambitious EU position” in the OECD-led negotiations on how to address international corporate tax challenges in a digitalised era. These negotiations provide a historic opportunity to adapt corporate tax rules for the 21st century, and to strengthen tax justice at global level.

In reaction to European Commission proposals related to corporate tax, released on 22 December 2021, Chiara Putaturo, Oxfam’s EU Tax expert, said: “After almost two years into the global COVID-19 pandemic, that has increased inequality across Europe and poured billions of taxpayers' money into keeping businesses afloat, it’s high time that the European Commission proposes to make big companies pay more taxes."

Fifty one of the 68 companies that were lent money by the World Bank’s private lending arm in 2015 to finance investments in sub-Saharan Africa use tax havens, Oxfam revealed today.

More than 300 leading economists from 30 countries have today written to world leaders warning that there is no economic justification for allowing tax havens to continue, and urging them to bring an end to offshore financial secrecy.
