Since 2015, the crisis in Burkina Faso has continued to deteriorate. A committed woman living in a dramatic security context, Naomie Ouedraogo Bicaba is shaking up traditional thinking to make her contribution to the return of peace. With the coronavirus pandemic, peace is more than ever a question of survival in the country.

While we are encouraged by the Chair statements and the Summit deliberations, Oxfam believes that African leaders have let African women down, in their effort to end the conflict and find a peaceful resolution to years of brutality and violence that ripped the continent.

After four years of peace talks, the Colombian government and FARC-EP guerrilla group have signed a final agreement in Havana, Cuba. This agreement puts an end to FARC as a guerrilla group and opens up the possibility for the definite end of more than 50 years of internal conflict.

Only a complete end to the siege in Madaya, and in other beseiged areas such as Fua’a and Kafraya, together with guarantees for sustained aid deliveries alongside humanitarian services will alleviate the crisis in these areas. Oxfam and other leading aid agencies warn that this one off permission to deliver will be insufficient given the current shocking reported levels of malnutrition.

In a small town in South Sudan, Oxfam has supported five fishing groups with capital and business training to set up cooperative models. The groups work together to find alternatives solutions to problems in their communities. They are using the Nile and its vast resource as common ground for dialogue and income generation.
