Oxfam statement on unrest in the Maghreb

Published: 22nd February 2011

Oxfam deplores the use of lethal force against unarmed civilian protesters in North Africa, particularly evident in Libya. Oxfam supports the rights of all to live in dignity with political freedom and with full social and economic rights and opportunities. They should be able to express their opinions freely and to demonstrate peacefully, without running the risk of violent oppression.

We call on all relevant actors to take immediate action and prioritize the protection of civilians in the increasingly insecure situation unfolding in North Africa. Basic human rights should be put above all other political and economic interests.

Oxfam has long-supported both civil society organizations and human rights defenders across North Africa, who have worked in pursuit of human rights and social justice, including women’s emancipation and workers’ rights.
