WEF Human Capital Report highlights need for massive increase in funding for public education

Published: 13th September 2017

Commenting on the World Economic Forum’s Human Capital Report which reveals that a failure of governments to invest in education and lifetime learning is a major driver of inequality, Max Lawson, Head of Policy for Oxfam’s Even It Up Campaign said:

“The Human Capital Report demonstrates the need for a massive increase in funding for public education – particularly in the world’s poorest countries - to stop the growing gap between rich and poor and build a workforce that is fit for the future.  Instead of private schooling for the rich, we need public education for all.

“Ensuring every child can access good quality public education through to secondary school level will cost an additional US$39 billion a year between 2015-2030.  This is a quarter of the tax dodged each year in poor countries by big corporations and wealthy individuals.  It is possible to find this money, and get every young person a good education.’
