Oxfam strongly welcomes today’s leaked documents on Luxembourg’s tax haven operations revealed by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), showing that Luxembourg granted favorable tax treatment to many multinational corporations in order for them to dodge taxes by routing their profits through the country.

As the world’s rich and powerful gather in Davos for the World Economic Forum, an  alliance of top international charities, human rights campaigners, women’s rights groups, green groups, civil society organizations and trade unions has come together to fight the growing crisis of inequality.

"Women and girls are today bravely taking a stand and Oxfam stands with them in solidarity," said Winnie Byanyima, Oxfam International Executive Director and women’s rights leader, this International Women’s Day.

Figures published today by the OECD show that development aid has slightly increased in 2020. Gender inequality is both the cause and the consequence of violence against women and girls, said Oxfam today, as the agency launches a new global campaign called “Enough: Together We Can End Violence Against Women and Girls” to stop one of the most prolific human rights violations.

Cutting development aid costs lives, and it will exacerbate poverty, inequality and instability across the globe, said Oxfam today in response to the publication of new aid figures by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Inequality, already extreme before COVID-19, has reached new levels. There is an urgent need for governments to implement highly progressive taxation measures that in turn must be used to invest in powerful and proven measures to reduce inequalities.

Today’s World Wealth Report from Capgemini shows that times have never been better for the world’s wealthiest - since 2009 more than 4.5 million new millionaires have been created, rising to a total of 15.4 million millionaires across the world last year. Yet while the wealthy prosper, 702 million people living in extreme poverty are being left behind.

Runaway inequality has created a world where 62 people own as much wealth as the poorest half of the world’s population combined, according to an Oxfam report published today ahead of the annual gathering of the world’s financial and political elites in Davos.
