"Leaders took to the world stage with words of inspiration but delegates have got little more to bring the world closer to a strong climate deal, said Oxfam’s climate change lead, Kelly Dent, in response to leaders’ speeches for action on the opening day of the Paris climate talks.

The poorest half of the world’s population - 3.5 billion people - is responsible for just 10 percent of carbon emissions, despite being the most threatened by the catastrophic storms, droughts, and other severe weather shocks linked to climate change.  

Commenting on the Powering Past Coal Alliance co-launched by the United Kingdom at COP 23 in Bonn, Tracy Carty, senior policy advisor at Oxfam GB said:"The UK pioneered coal powered electricity 150 years ago, and today it is leading a global charge to end its use. The 20-plus governments that today committed to be part of the alliance to phase out coal represents real and tangible progress in the fight against climate change.…

“Oxfam welcomes any fall in the number of hungry people. This is proof that we can make great strides in eradicating global hunger. Communities hit by climate-related disasters may have to wait even longer for help since negotiations at COP23 are failing to make meaningful progress on “loss and damage” finance. 

“There is still a long way to go: this is crunch time. The chance to set new funding targets from when the Paris deal comes into force in 2020 is still very much on the table and needs to stay there if developing countries are to have any hope of more support in the years ahead."
