In 2011, Somalia experienced a devastating famine that killed over a quarter of a million people – half of them children under the age of five. The international community failed to act in time, despite repeated warnings of an impending crisis. Yet, just over a decade later, and despite various alarms over the past two years, world leaders are once again responding too late and with too little to avert catastrophic hunger in East Africa.

More than 80 million people around the world are now officially displaced from their homes. Migration is not a threat to be stopped, it is a complex phenomenon to be managed. Everyone has the right to be safe and to be treated with dignity. Oxfam works with refugees and migrants to help protect people on the move who, when leaving home, are often in the most vulnerable moment of their lives.

On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared Covid-19 a pandemic. A year on. The disease affected us all in different and unpredictable ways, and hit Oxfam too. But because of the belief and goodwill of our amazing supporters and partners we emerge having helped 14 million people around the world. Here's a snapshot of the past year of our work.

According to the latest statistics, an estimated 9.3 million people in Syria are now food insecure. This is almost half of the population in a war-torn country whose lives and livelihoods have been affected by the economic impact of coronavirus, with the most vulnerable hit the hardest. 

Oxfam has developed an “Improving Safeguarding and Culture Plan” to drive its work over the next years. The plan aims to align our approach across the confederation and links our work on safeguarding, culture change, gender, programs and human resources, within an improved governance framework.

12 months after Cyclone Idai battered Southern Africa, more than 8.7 million people remain in desperate need of food and water.
